Bermuda's Architectural Jewels
This is a short video about the different designs & architecture used in Bermuda's private houses, historic buildings and landmark structures. For details, go through https://www.bermuda-attractions.com/bermuda_0002f0.htm Oldest standing private house in Bermuda (now a museum) is CARTER HOUSE which was built in 1620 at St. David's. Bermuda limestone was used for the construction. The house has a gabled roof with horizontal grooves and large chimney. One of the most striking features is the staircase at the centre with two 'Welcoming Arms' that leads to the upper floor. Another very old house is THE BRIDGE HOUSE, located in St. George and built in a similar fashion in 1707. In fact, even today, most private houses in Bermuda are built with limestone and have gabled limestone roofs with grooves that help in channelising and purifying rainwater. However, the houses today have bright pastel colours and modern touches... many of them use wonderful casement windows. COMMISSIONER'S HOUSE located in Royal Naval Dockyard was the residence of Dockyard Commissioner and is the first cast iron house in the world. It is built in the Georgian style. Other examples of Georgian architectue include VERDMONT in Smith's parish that was built in 1710, CAMDEN HOUSE located within the Botanical Gardens which is the official residence of Bermuda's Premier, etc. Gothic architecture has been used mostly in churches. Examples include CATHEDRAL OF THE MOST HOLI TRINITY located in Hamilton City... construction was completed in 1894, UNFINISHED CHURCH in St. George whose construction started in 1874 but was never finished due to lack of funds and parish infighting, etc. The oldest standing official building in Bermuda is THE OLD STATE HOUSE located in St, George. It was built in 1620 in an Italian style. The iconic CITY HALL & ARTS CENTRE in Hamilton City was built using limestones and in traditional Bermuda cottage style. The circular designs of the BERMUDA MOONGATES have been adapted from China, however, the moongates in Bermuda are made of limestones. There are a number of them across the island and they signify good luck and blessings to couples who walk through them. GIBBS HILL LIGHTHOUSE in Southampton is one of the oldest cast-iron lighthouses in the world that was built in 1846. There are many other historic buildings in Bermuda that reflect mastery in design and architecture including numerous forts that were built by the British during the colonial days, museums and monuments.
