Bistro J Bermuda
$$, Seafood/Bermudian
We love the ambience at Bistro J. Although you don't get any water views from here like its sister restaurant Port O' Call, one of the striking features is its homely ambience and that too in a place like Hamilton City.
As you walk in, you will see walls with brick finish for the lower part and the rest painted pale yellow. With the chalkboard menu hanging on a wall, small number of tables with a total capacity of about 40, you are right at home. Yes, the menu is on a chalkboard and having only limited items.
There are about six appetizers, six entrees and few desserts to choose from. But let me tell you, that's enough for a happy meal. This is a local favorite and visitors like us who have discovered Bistro J keep coming back to this restaurant.
The items are inexpensive compared to Bermuda standards and value for money is great. It's located on a narrow alleyway off Front Street behind its more elegant and upscale sister restaurant
Port O' Call. Bistro J on the other hand is a Bistro style restaurant, but shares the same kitchen with Port O Call.

Dishes are prepared from fresh ingredients available in the market on the day. So even the small menu can change at times. Let's take a look at a typical lunch menu:
For Appetizer you have a choice of roasted fennel cream soup, grilled Caesar salad, grilled scallops with avocado and tortilla, BBQ duck and mushroom crepe with mango salsa, chorizo and potato wontons with smoked tomato, and calamari with BBQ sauce.
For the main course, there are great dishes like linguine and shrimp with pine nuts, fresh tomato and basil, or maple roasted chicken, rib eye steak with mushrooms, and honey and chili glazed mahi mahi with Basmati rice.
Bistro J won the Best Decadent Desert Award from The Bermudian magazine. You get great choices like vanilla bean cheesecake with raspberry coulis, Mocha Tart espresso ice cream, sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream or the home made ice creams and sorbets.
There is a well stocked bar. They have excellent selections of wine. Remember that it's a small venue and avoid sitting next to the door or below the stairs. The only downside of the restaurant is when there is a private party going on. It becomes a little too noisy as there is no private dining room here.
