Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition

 
 
The annual Bermuda sand sculpture and castle competition is held in the Horseshoe Bay Beach. This is an international event and is usually held in August/September. The competition first started in 1996 and is mainly organized by the Institute of Bermuda Architects. The Department of Tourism also actively supports the event. 
 
 
 
If you are in Bermuda during this time, don't miss it. Best of skilled artists from many parts of the world create some unbelievable sand models. Anybody can participate or watch the competition. The entree is free. There are usually the following categories for the competition - Families, Children, Teenagers, Company, Tourists and Professionals.

The first prize is offered at $1000 for the overall winner as well as for the winner of the professional group. There are other prizes as well. However, there are some strict rules to be followed. For example, there can be no more than 6 persons in a team making the sculpture or the castle. Each team has to complete the work within 6 hours between 10am - 4pm. And, each team only gets a 12 foot by 12 foot area to build the sand sculpture.

2018 Update

 
The competition was a huge success this year as well. It took place on the week end of September 2, 2018. 41 teams participated. Cash prizes worth $3,000 were given to the first, second and third places in each category. 
 

2016 Schedule

 
The competition will be held on 3rd September 2016 (Saturday) at Horseshoe Bay Beach. Lot size is 10ft by 10ft within which sand sculptures must be created between 10am to 4pm. Teams should have up to 6 members each. Winners in various categories will be announced at 5pm. 
 
Update September 2016: This was the 21st Sand Sculpture Competition in the island which was held successfully. 26 teams participated. 
 

2015 Update

 
The 20th Sand Sculpture competition was held at Horseshoe on 5th September 2015. Category of prizes included Children, Teenagers, Open, Family, Tourists, Overall etc. 
 

2014 Update

 
The 19th Sand Sculpture Competition was held on Aug 30th 2014 at Horseshoe Bay Beach between 10am to 4pm. Like previous years, there were various categories including Family, Children below 12, Teenagers, Open (i.e., Companies, Visitors etc). There was no entry fee. Cash prizes given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in all categories. 
 
 

2013 Schedule

 
This is the 18th Annual Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition and will be held on August 31, 2013 between 10am to 4pm at the Horseshoe Bay Beach. 
 

2012 Updates

 
The 17th Sand Sculpture competition was held on September 1st 2012 on Saturday. There were over thirty entries with team size of up to 6 sand shapers. Several thousand people gathered at the beach on a clear sunny day to watch sand sculptures that were themed around sharks, landscapes, Bermuda cottages, Goslings Rum, Long Tail birds and such. Categories included Children, Teenagers, Family, Tourists etc. While there was a prize for each category, there was also an overall winner.

2011 Competition Updates

 
The 2011 sand sculpture competition was hosted by Bermuda Department of Tourism and held at the Horseshoe Bay Beach on September 3rd. Each participant was given 12-foot by 12-foot area on the beach to create their sand sculptures. There were various excellent sculptures created on concepts like cars, sharks, giant octopus, frog and more. There were various categories including children's, teenager's, family, tourist's, open, company etc. The overall grand prize winner received $1,000, the second prize was $500 and third $250.
