Update October 2017: Newport Gastro pub has closed down. A new restaurant
Mediterra offering Mediterranean cuisine has opened in its place.
Newport Room is part of the Fairmont Southampton Hotel and located in Southampton Parish. The restaurant has been recently redesigned and re-classified, and has been turned into a gastropub from a formal restaurant that earlier served French cuisine and provided exclusive fine dining experience.
So what is a gastropub? It is a combination of a restaurant (gastronomy) and pub having casual relaxed ambience. The concept originated in England in the late 1900s to give a different flavor to a traditional pub which only served pub fares.
So a gastropub takes the pub concept a step forward. While retaining the pub grubs like burgers, salads, shepherd's pie, fish and chips, bangers and mash, frites, chops, lasagna etc, it also adds a range of meal options to the menu, so that you can plan to have a complete meal while enjoying your drinks in a pub atmosphere. This is a major change from what we experienced here even in 2011. The new management decided to bring in new variations to rejuvenate the restaurants in the hotel and create the first gastropub in the Bermuda.
So what are the best dishes to try at the Newport Room? While the menu is now quite elaborate, for small nibbles, some of the great dishes that the restaurant boasts of are its selection of charcuterie (bresaola, salami, ham etc) or even the oysters from the raw bar. Note that charcuterie preparation uses the preservation process to retain the flavors.
For hearty meals, one of the best options here is the braised lamb cottage pie. Other nice dishes include the prawn preparation, lobster dishes, steaks and roasted chicken. Another favorite dish here is the steak frites where in-house spices are used and it is flame grilled. The dish uses a cut piece of meat full of flavor, hand cut fries and roasted bone marrow. You can finish off with lemon pudding or chocolate black forest flavored ice creams.
Well, essentially being a pub restaurant, Newport now has a long list of beer and wine selections. You get different types of beer including from countries like Belgium, Philippines, USA, Germany, Australia, Japan etc right from the tap.
Reservations are not required. Dress code is resort casual. They have children's menu as well.
Open Hours
Dinner menu is available from 6pm - 10pm.
Newport is closed on Tuesdays. They accept credit cards and welcome outside guests as well.

Newport Room in earlier days
My wife and I first stayed in Fairmont Southampton in 2005. It was mostly out of convenience that we made a reservation at the Newport Room for the first time. But every time thereafter whenever we visited the island, we kept coming back to this elegant and exclusive restaurant that served excellent French cuisine.
Newport Room had a luxury yacht-style environment. It added a touch of nostalgia, presenting scenes from the Newport Bermuda sailing race that started in 1938 from Newport, Rhode Island and is still held today. A dining attendant greeted you as you entered the restaurant. There were small replicas of sailing boats placed in the middle of the dining room.
With wide selection of international wine served in Irish crystal, we would go for house-oak smoked salmon to start with. We would then start with our favorite main dishes - pan seared arctic char and bay scallops in a lobster-vanilla sauce.
Some of the other favorite choices would be the Angus beef tenderloin with tomato tart and Madeira jus, or crab crusted grouper. Finally, we would finish it off with our favorite desert, the soufflé of the day.
Newport Room was an upscale restaurant. A three course fixed price menu would cost $75. Main courses cost from $35 to $45. The restaurant was quite formal and required men to wear jackets. Ties were preferred.
